Helene Schjerfbeck is regarded in Finland as one of the country's most important painters and holds an exceptional position in Nordic art history. Born in Helsinki in 1862, she developed a distinctive style that ranged from academic realism through Impressionist influences to a late, pared-down visual language that earned international recognition. She attracted particular attention with her series of self-portraits, painted over decades, in which she captured her own ageing with unflinching precision. Despite a life marked by physical limitations and long years of secluded work in the provinces, Schjerfbeck experienced a late rediscovery by the Finnish art world during her own lifetime.

Her work exemplifies the development of Finnish modernism at the turn of the century, when the country, still under Russian rule, was searching for its own cultural identity. Schjerfbeck belonged to a generation of Finnish artists who studied in Paris and other European art centres and transformed these influences into a distinctly Nordic visual language. Today, her works hang in Finland's leading museums, including the Ateneum in Helsinki, and are exhibited internationally. On the occasion of her 150th birthday in 2012, Finland honoured Helene Schjerfbeck with a 2-euro commemorative coin — a tribute underscoring her stature as a national cultural figure.
