Further information

When Portuguese seafarers reached the island of Timor in the eastern Malay Archipelago around 1515, they encountered a society shaped by Austronesian settlement history, animist belief systems and a fragmented chieftain structure. Portugal gradually secured trading posts and mission areas on the island, whose sandalwood was highly sought after in the European market. The Portuguese presence remained concentrated over the centuries on the eastern part of the island, while the Dutch expanded in the west - a division formalised in the Treaty of Lisbon of 1859 that ultimately prepared the ground for today's border between Timor-Leste and Indonesian West Timor.

Portuguese Timor remained Portuguese territory until 1975 - almost exactly 460 years after the first contact - a colonial continuity that was unusually long by global comparison. Following the Carnation Revolution in Portugal and a brief period of independence, the territory was annexed by Indonesia in 1976. It was only after the independence referendum of 1999 and a period of UN transitional administration that the young state of Timor-Leste emerged in 2002, today helping to shape the Lusophone community of nations in which Portugal plays a central role. In 2015, Portugal marked the 500th anniversary of this first encounter with a 2-euro commemorative coin.
