A typographic composition of the word 'EMONA' (also 'AEMONA') alongside a stylised representation of the ancient settlement. Along the lower section, the semicircular inscription 'EMONA LJUBLJANA SLOVENIJA 2015'.
Emona was one of the most significant Roman colonies in the south-eastern Alpine region and at the same time one of the Empire's northernmost city foundations in this area. Roman Emona, whose full name was Iulia Emona, was laid out during the Augustan era according to a planned grid of right-angled streets and had a fortified urban area of around 24 hectares. The layout followed the classical plan of a Roman municipium, with a forum, baths, and a sophisticated water supply system. Emona lay on strategically important trade and military routes linking the Mediterranean with the Danube provinces, making it an early crossroads between Romanized civilization and the Germanic-Illyrian border region.
The archaeological remains of Emona lie today beneath and directly beside the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, striking evidence of this settlement's urban continuity across two millennia. Excavations in the city area have uncovered city walls, houses, necropolises, and everyday objects, now on display at the Ljubljana City Museum. The relationship between ancient Emona and medieval Laibach, from which Ljubljana emerged, is historically complex — a direct continuity of settlement is not confirmed, but the spatial proximity and the medieval reuse of Roman building material are documented. Slovenia honored the 2000th anniversary of Emona's founding in 2015 with a 2-euro commemorative coin, placing the ancient roots of its present-day capital at the center of national remembrance.
