The Lithuanian €2 circulation coin bears the national coat of arms, featuring Vytis — the white armoured knight on horseback. The year of issue appears to the upper right; below, the country name "LIETUVA" and the mint mark of the UAB mint in Kaunas.
Vytis, meaning "knight" or "chaser", is one of Europe's oldest state emblems, tracing back to the equestrian seals of medieval Lithuanian grand dukes. The image of an armored knight brandishing a raised sword originally symbolized the military power of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, one of the largest states in Europe during the 14th and 15th centuries. After decades of Soviet occupation, Vytis was reinstated as Lithuania's official coat of arms upon regaining independence in 1991.
