An archipelago seascape of the Åland Islands. The lower half shows a shipping route with nautical markers, the bow of a boat, and a hand holding a compass; the horizontal centre line represents the horizon. Clouds fill the upper half. Along the inner rim at the bottom the commemoration inscription in Finnish — "AHVENANMAAN ITSEHALLINTO 100 VUOTTA" — and above the design in Swedish — "ÅLANDS SJÄLVSTYRELSE 100 ÅR" — the two separated by diamond-shaped sea buoys. Above the buoys on the right appear the year "2021" and the country abbreviation "FI"; on the left, the mint mark of the Finnish Mint.
The Åland Islands hold a legally unique position within Finland. The archipelago, comprising around 6,700 islands, lies strategically between Finland and Sweden at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia and, after the First World War, became the subject of an international territorial dispute: both Finland and Sweden laid claim to the islands, whose population is Swedish-speaking and had at the time voted, in the majority, in favour of joining Sweden. In 1921, the League of Nations decided that the Åland Islands should remain part of Finland, but linked this decision to a far-reaching autonomy arrangement. Since then, the islands have had their own parliament, the Lagting, govern large parts of their public affairs independently, and are permanently recognised as a demilitarised and neutralised zone. This statute is still regarded today as one of the earliest and most stable models of regional autonomy in Europe.
The Åland autonomy model has proven successful over the hundred years since its introduction and is cited internationally as an example for handling minority rights and territorial disputes. The islands maintain their own administration and a separate postal service, and are treated separately from Finland for tax purposes, which also secures them a special status within the European Union. Shipping has traditionally played a central economic role: ferries between Finland and Sweden regularly call at the main island, Fasta Åland, and maritime infrastructure has shaped everyday life in the archipelago for as long as anyone can remember. To mark the centenary of self-government, Finland issued a 2-euro commemorative coin in 2021 recalling this historic milestone.
