A dancer caught in a powerful, free-flowing movement, the fabric billowing in the stage lights accentuating the beauty and sweep of the pose. Below: the year "2022"; above: the country abbreviation "FI" and the mint mark.
The Finnish National Ballet is one of the oldest and most respected ballet institutions in Northern Europe. Founded in 1922 as part of the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, it grew from a small dance group into an internationally recognised company with a broad repertoire ranging from classical works to contemporary productions. The work of Finnish choreographers and dancers was particularly influential, giving the company a distinctive artistic style over the decades — marked by clean lines, expressive body language and a clear connection to Nordic aesthetics. The Helsinki Opera House, home to the National Ballet since 1993, is today one of the most visited opera houses in Scandinavia.
For Finland, the National Ballet is more than a cultural institution: it stands for the nation-building spirit following independence in 1917 and for the importance the young state attached to high culture from the outset. Developing an independent ballet art form was part of a broader project of cultural identity-building that ran through Finland's 20th century, alongside the establishment of language, literature and music as national heritage. To mark its centenary in 2022, Finland honoured this history with a 2-euro commemorative coin.
