A stylised beard lichen with its root-like structure. Along the left edge the commemoration inscription in Finnish — "ILMASTOTUTKIMUS" — and along the right edge in Swedish — "KLIMATFORSKNING". At the top centre the mint mark of the Finnish Mint; below the design the year "2022" and the country abbreviation "FI".
Finland has one of the longest traditions of systematic environmental and climate observation. The Finnish Meteorological Institute, founded in 1838, has been collecting data on temperature, precipitation and atmospheric change for nearly two centuries — a continuity unmatched in global climate science. Finland's geographical position between the North Atlantic and the Eurasian continent makes it a sensitive monitoring site: climate change shows up here earlier and more clearly than in many other parts of Europe. Forest cover, sea ice in the Baltic and the country's extensive peatlands serve as natural climate indicators, whose changes Finnish researchers have documented across generations.
Lichenology holds particular significance as a field of research in this context. Beard lichens and related species are considered bioindicators: they respond to air quality and climatic changes with measurable sensitivity, providing insight into long-term environmental trends. Finnish scientists have carried out internationally recognised foundational research in this field. Today, Finland coordinates climate research projects within European and Arctic programmes and is involved in monitoring permafrost soils in the subarctic zone — data indispensable for global climate models. Finland's 2022 2-euro commemorative coin honours this scientific tradition under the title "Climate Research in Finland".
