Located in southwestern Finland, Turku — known in Swedish as Åbo — is the country's oldest city and served as its capital until 1812. It was here, in 1920, that Finland's first Finnish-language university was founded on private initiative: the University of Turku, Turun yliopisto in Finnish. Its founding was more than an educational act — it was a linguistic and political signal. Finland had only gained independence from Russia in 1917, and the question of which language, Finnish or Swedish, would shape public life was highly charged politically. A Finnish-language university was thus part of the nation's process of self-discovery. At the time, the University of Helsinki already existed, but it was traditionally strongly shaped by Swedish.
Over the course of the 20th century, the University of Turku developed into one of Finland's most important research and teaching institutions. Today it is one of the country's largest universities, with a broad range of subjects from medicine and law to the natural and human sciences. Turku itself, as a university city, is closely interwoven with academic life — two further institutions of higher education, including Åbo Akademi, a Swedish-language university, further shape the cityscape. The 100th anniversary of the University of Turku in 2020 gave Finland the occasion to issue a 2-euro commemorative coin highlighting the relationship between science and society.
