The successive names of Slovenia's oldest museum over the past 200 years, shown in three of four concentric rings in both Slovenian and German — a nod to the museum's heritage within the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The innermost ring bears the issuing state 'SLOVENIJA' and the year '2021'.
The Provincial Museum of Carniola in Ljubljana is one of Slovenia's oldest and most important cultural institutions. Founded in 1821 under Habsburg rule as the Carniolan Provincial Museum, it was from the outset a place for gathering knowledge about the region: natural history, archaeology, history and art of the then Duchy of Carniola were systematically documented here. It has borne its current name, Narodni muzej Slovenije — National Museum of Slovenia — since the second half of the 20th century, reflecting the shift from a regional institution of the Danube monarchy to a national site of memory for the independent Republic of Slovenia. The changing names over two centuries exemplify the historical upheavals that have shaped present-day Slovenia: from the Austro-Hungarian administrative structure, through the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and the socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, to statehood from 1991 onward.
Over its now 200-year history, the museum has built collections of international standing, including the Vače Situla — a Celtic-Hallstatt-era bronze vessel regarded as one of the most significant archaeological objects of the Alpine region — as well as extensive Roman-era finds from the area of ancient Emona, today's Ljubljana. Slovenia honoured this anniversary in 2021 with a 2-euro commemorative coin whose design deliberately references the museum's various historical names, making the institution's cultural continuity visible.
