Portraits of the celebrant Grand Duke Jean with the inscription "JEAN" and "1921" to the left, and the reigning Grand Duke Henri with "HENRI" to the right. Along the left edge: the commemorative inscription "GROUSSHERZOGE VU LËTZEBURERG". Below left: the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Luxembourg; below right: the Adolphe Bridge and the year "2021".
Alongside the standard-strike version, a specially struck "minted photo image technique" proof was also issued, similar to the 2012 and 2015 editions.
Jean of Luxembourg was the fifth Grand Duke of the House of Nassau-Weilburg and shaped the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg over four decades. Born on 5 January 1921 as the son of Grand Duchess Charlotte and Prince Félix, he first assumed the regency in 1964 before ascending to the throne after his mother's abdication. His reign, which lasted until 2000, coincided with a period of profound economic change: under his rule, Luxembourg developed from a steel-producing centre into Europe's leading financial hub. Jean was also closely tied to the European unification project as a co-founder of the European Community — his country was among the founding states of what is now the EU. He died in Luxembourg City in 2019 at the age of 98.
His successor, Grand Duke Henri, has ruled the Grand Duchy since his father's abdication in 2000. The dynastic continuity of the House of Nassau continues to shape Luxembourg's national identity to this day; the country is regarded as a constitutional monarchy with a strong European orientation. To mark Grand Duke Jean's 100th birthday, Luxembourg honoured its head of state and his legacy in 2021 with a 2-euro commemorative coin depicting both generations — Jean and Henri — together. Notre-Dame Cathedral in Luxembourg City, one of the capital's most significant landmarks and the traditional site of coronation for Luxembourg's Grand Dukes, underscores the ruling house's deep historical roots in its capital.
