Dürer's Madonna and Child (1526), an oil painting of the Northern Renaissance now in the Uffizi. To the right of the design: Dürer's famous monogram "AD"; to the left: the "R" of the Rome mint. To the right: the commemorative inscription "DÜRER"; below: the dates "1471 – 2021" and the issuing state "SAN MARINO".
Albrecht Dürer is one of the most important artists of the European Renaissance and remains a reference figure in art history far beyond the German-speaking world. Born in Nuremberg in 1471, the painter, printmaker and art theorist combined, like few contemporaries, the craftsmanship precision of the German late Gothic with the humanist thought of Italy. His engravings and woodcuts set technical standards that remained influential well into the 16th century, and his theoretical writings on proportion and perspective earned him recognition as a scholar in his own right. Works such as "Melencolia I", "Young Hare" and the 1500 self-portrait belong to the canon of Western pictorial art.
Dürer's connection to Italy was no peripheral episode but a productive exchange: he travelled to Venice twice, met Giovanni Bellini there, and played a major role in transmitting the style of the Italian High Renaissance to Central Europe. His late work shows an increasing turn towards calm, contemplative compositions, including Madonna paintings that now hang in Europe's most important museums, including the Uffizi in Florence. In 2021, San Marino honoured, on the occasion of his 550th birthday, an artist whose work has transcended the boundaries of national art history for centuries.
