Further information

For the Principality of Monaco, the Grimaldi ruling family is far more than a dynastic symbol — it is a constitutive part of the state's identity. Prince Albert II, reigning monarch since 2005, continues this tradition as head of state of one of the smallest and, at the same time, wealthiest countries in the world. His wife, Charlene, born Wittstock, came to international attention as a South African swimmer and married Albert II in July 2011 in a two-day state ceremony at the Prince's Palace of Monaco. The wedding was the first major princely event in Monaco since the marriage of Rainier III to Grace Kelly in 1956 and attracted worldwide attention.

The princely couple has since remained at the centre of public life in the Mediterranean city-state. Albert II is internationally engaged especially in environmental and climate protection, while Charlene is dedicated to social projects and swimming promotion in Africa. Both represent Monaco at European and international events and shape the Principality's public image. In 2021, Monaco marked the couple's tenth wedding anniversary with a 2-euro commemorative coin — an occasion that, for the small Mediterranean country, also embodies state continuity and dynastic stability.
