Further information
Prince Albert I (1848–1922) ruled the Principality of Monaco from 1889 and is regarded as one of the most influential princes of the House of Grimaldi. He became internationally known as the "Prince of the Seas": he financed and led numerous scientific expeditions, is considered one of the founders of modern oceanography, and in 1910 had the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco built as well as the Institut océanographique founded in Paris. He also promoted research into human prehistory by founding the Institut de Paléontologie Humaine.
On the domestic front, Albert I modernised the principality and, in 1911, gave Monaco its first constitution, with which he transformed the absolute monarchy into a constitutional one. Throughout his life, he campaigned for international understanding and international arbitration. He died on 26 June 1922; the Monegasque €2 commemorative coin marks the 100th anniversary of his death in 2022.
