At the center are the 12 stars of the European flag, the stylized silhouette of the European Commission building in Brussels, and a stylized globe highlighting Cyprus's geostrategically important position, symbolized by the outline of the Mediterranean island, on which the country name appears in Greek („KYΠPOΣ") and Turkish („KIBRIS"). Running along the edge of the design from lower left to lower right is the occasion of issue „20 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ AΠΟ THΝ ENTAΞH ΤΗΣ ΚΥΠΡΟΥ ΣΤΗΝ ΕΥΡΩΠΑΪΚΗ ΕΝΩΣΗ", with the years „2004 – 2024" shown at the bottom.
When the European Union expanded by ten new member states in May 2004, it marked the largest single enlargement in the history of the bloc. Cyprus was among this group — despite an island division dating back to 1974 that remains politically unresolved to this day. EU accession applied legally to the Republic of Cyprus as a whole, but in practice only to the southern part controlled by the Cypriot government. This arrangement is unique in European law and makes Cyprus a special case within the single market. Geopolitically, the island holds a key position in the eastern Mediterranean: it lies closer to the coasts of Syria and Lebanon than to Athens, making it the EU's easternmost member state.
The Republic of Cyprus became independent in 1960, after decades of British colonial rule and a turbulent history under Venetian, Ottoman, and finally British administration. The Greek- and Turkish-speaking populations, whose coexistence had developed over centuries, fell into severe conflict in the 1960s, culminating in the 1974 Turkish military intervention and the division of the island. Despite this unresolved question, the southern part developed into a stable democracy with a well-developed services economy. EU accession in 2004 and the introduction of the euro in 2008 firmly anchored Cyprus within Europe's institutional framework. With the 2024 commemorative coin, Cyprus marks the twentieth anniversary of that accession.
