Coin description

A woman's face, from whose head — as if thoughts or hair — fan-shaped, spiral-like concentric lines radiate outward. These are composed of women's given names in Catalan, densely arranged, as a tribute to the solidarity of all women in the struggle for universal suffrage. The occasion '50 ANYS DEL SUFRAGI UNIVERSAL FEMENÍ' runs along the upper edge; the issuing state 'ANDORRA' and the years '1970' and '2020' appear at the lower right.

Further information

Andorra was among the last European states to introduce universal women's suffrage. It was not until 1970 that women in the Principality gained the right to take part in national elections — a step taken within a political system that, to this day, is jointly governed by two co-princes with equal rights, the Bishop of Urgell and the President of France. As in many Romance-speaking countries, women's social standing in Andorra had long been shaped by tradition and church law; the demand for political equality had to prevail against conservative structures in one of Europe's smallest states. The country's Catalan heritage, reflected in its language, law and cultural identity, formed the framework within which women eventually gained full civil rights.

The introduction of women's suffrage was not an isolated event but part of a gradual democratisation that Andorra underwent in the second half of the 20th century, culminating in the country's first modern constitution in 1993. This constitution enshrined equality and fundamental rights in binding form and established gender equality at the constitutional level. Since then, Andorra has positioned itself as a modern small state at the heart of Europe — economically shaped by tourism and finance, politically by its unique co-principality. Andorra's 2020 2-euro commemorative coin marks the 50th anniversary of the introduction of universal women's suffrage, honouring a turning point that continues to shape Andorran society today.
