The Torre de la Iglesia del Salvador in Teruel, a bell tower in the Mudéjar architectural style. To the left, the issuing state 'ESPAÑA'; to the right of the design, the year '2020' and the 'M' mint mark of Madrid. The commemorative inscription 'ARQUITECTURA MUDÉJAR DE ARAGÓN' is struck above.
In medieval Aragon, a building style unlike any other in Europe developed between the 12th and 17th centuries: Mudéjar architecture. It arose in regions where Christian rulers and Muslim craftsmen lived in mutual cultural exchange for centuries. Moorish building techniques — above all the elaborate use of brick, glazed ceramic tiles and filigree ornamental masonry — flowed into Christian churches, towers and palaces. The result is buildings of unmistakable character: not a mere imitation of Islamic architecture, but a genuine synthesis of two cultures. UNESCO recognised this distinctiveness early on: as far back as 1986, the first Aragonese Mudéjar buildings were added to the World Heritage List, followed in 2001 by a significant expansion of the protected area.
Teruel, a provincial capital in south-eastern Aragon, is regarded as one of the most important centres of this building tradition. The city has several church towers and building ensembles from the 12th to 14th centuries that display the full spectrum of Aragonese Mudéjar style: from its austere early form to its decoratively elaborate late phase with richly ornamented ceramic bands. The Torre del Salvador, one of the striking bell towers of the old town, exemplifies this heritage — a building that combines structural principles of the Islamic minaret with Christian sacred architecture. Spain honoured the Mudéjar architecture of Aragon in 2020 as part of its UNESCO World Heritage series with a 2-euro commemorative coin.
