The crowned arms of King Felipe VI; the inscription '50 ANIVERSARIO DE S.M. FELIPE VI', the state name 'ESPAÑA', the year '2018', and the mint mark.
Felipe VI was born on 30 January 1968 in Madrid and grew up as the son of King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía in a Spain undergoing profound political change after the Franco dictatorship. His education was deliberately international in scope: after finishing school, he completed military training in all three branches of the armed forces and studied law and international relations in Madrid as well as at Georgetown University in Washington. This combination of military discipline and academic breadth shaped a crown prince who spent decades carefully preparing to take the throne.
On 19 June 2014, Felipe VI ascended the Spanish throne following his father's decision to abdicate, taking the crown at a politically extraordinarily tense moment: the Catalan crisis, a deep economic recession, and weakened trust in institutions posed considerable challenges for the monarchy. Felipe VI repeatedly positioned himself as a defender of the constitutional order and national unity, without fundamentally rejecting dialogue with the regions. Spain honored his 50th birthday in 2018 with a 2-euro commemorative coin marking this stage of his life.
