The Church of Santa María del Naranco in Oviedo; the state name 'ESPAÑA', the year '2017', and the mint mark.
The pre-Asturian and Asturian architecture of the 7th to 10th centuries is regarded as one of the most distinctive architectural styles of the Iberian Peninsula. At the heart of this tradition stands Santa María del Naranco, originally built as a secular palace for King Ramiro I and later consecrated as a church. The 9th-century building stands out for its unusually two-storied design for the period, its open loggias, and a decorative structure of round-arch motifs that is neither fully Romanesque nor Byzantine, but forms a regional synthesis. Together with neighboring buildings such as San Miguel de Lillo and the structures in Oviedo itself, Santa María del Naranco represents an architectural culture that developed in the mountainous north of Iberia during the Reconquista and marks, both politically and religiously, the foundation of the later Kingdom of Asturias.
The Principality of Asturias holds a special place in Spanish history: it was the only territory on the Iberian Peninsula to resist the Arab expansion of the 8th century, and it became the starting point of the Christian reconquest. The surviving monumental buildings from this period are concentrated around Oviedo and were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985, with further sites added in an extension in 1998. They stand as testimony to a transitional era in which Visigothic traditions merged with Carolingian influences and local developments. Spain honored this heritage in 2017 with a 2-euro commemorative coin as part of its UNESCO World Heritage series, placing the monuments of Oviedo and the Kingdom of Asturias on a par with the series' other World Heritage sites.
