Further information

Santiago de Compostela has been one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the world since the Middle Ages. The city in northwestern Spain, located in the autonomous community of Galicia, owes this status to the tomb of the Apostle James, venerated in its cathedral. Around this shrine, a dense urban fabric of Romanesque and Baroque buildings grew from the 11th and 12th centuries onward, largely preserved in its historic state to this day. The Camino de Santiago, the Way of St. James, brought pilgrims from across Europe to the city over the centuries, shaping not only its architecture and townscape but also the art, culture, and economy of the entire region. The cathedral, whose western façade, the Obradoiro, is one of the best-known buildings on the Iberian Peninsula, forms the architectural and spiritual center of this ensemble.

UNESCO inscribed the historic center of Santiago de Compostela on the World Heritage List in 1985, honoring both the outstanding universal value of the cityscape and the living pilgrimage tradition that continues to this day. Spain is among the countries with the most listed World Heritage sites, and Santiago de Compostela holds a special place within this group, since the city is significant not only architecturally but as a living place of pilgrimage of global importance. As part of the Spanish UNESCO World Heritage series, Spain honored the historic center with a 2-euro commemorative coin in 2018.
