Further information

The University of Coimbra is one of Europe's oldest continuously operating universities and is deeply woven into the intellectual history of the Iberian Peninsula. King Dinis I founded it in Lisbon in 1290, and after several moves between the capital and Coimbra it finally settled permanently in the university town on the Mondego River in 1537. Over the centuries it trained the jurists, theologians and scholars who shaped Portuguese law and the administration of the colonial empire. Its library, the Biblioteca Joanina, was built in the early 18th century and is regarded as one of the finest examples of Portuguese Baroque architecture. Since 2013, the Alta Universitária, the historic university hill in Coimbra, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In 2020, Portugal honoured the 730th anniversary of the university's founding with a 2-euro commemorative coin. The institution's legacy reaches far beyond national borders: its chairs were held by scholars whose work influenced European humanist and legal thought. Coimbra has also left its mark linguistically — the city's dialect is considered especially prestigious within Portuguese, and Fado de Coimbra, the student fado that emerged at the university, differs clearly from Lisbon fado and is likewise part of the UNESCO cultural heritage. The University of Coimbra remains to this day one of the most renowned institutions of higher learning in Portugal and in Europe.
