The coat of arms of the ethnographic region of Aukštaitija (Highlands Lithuania). At the centre the shield bears Vytis — the mounted knight with drawn sword — supported by two angelic figures. Below, the motto "PATRIAM TUAM MUNDUM EXISTIMA" (Cherish your homeland throughout the world). Above: the issuing state "LIETUVA" and the year "2020". The inscription "Aukštaitija" and the Lithuanian mint mark complete the design at the bottom.
In the northeast of Lithuania lies Aukštaitija — also known in English as Upper Lithuania — one of the country's oldest and most culturally formative ethnographic regions. The area, spanning roughly between Vilnius, Utena and Panevėžys, was for centuries a core settlement zone of the Lithuanian people and is regarded as a stronghold of traditional folk culture: songs, weaving, wood carving and the ballad-like dainos singing tradition have survived here especially long. Its lake-studded landscape, with more than 900 lakes, shaped not only the region's way of life but also its language and customs — the Aukštaitian dialect forms the basis of standard modern Lithuanian.
The region's coat of arms bears the Vytis, the armoured horseman with drawn sword — a symbol closely tied throughout Lithuanian history to state sovereignty and national identity. The accompanying motto "Patriam tuam mundum existima" — roughly, "Consider your homeland the whole world" — reflects a diaspora-shaped patriotism that played a particular role in Lithuanian history given long periods of foreign rule and waves of emigration. Since 2010, Lithuania has dedicated its commemorative coin series to the country's five ethnographic regions; the 2020 issue honours Aukštaitija as one of these defining cultural landscapes that continue to shape the collective memory of the Lithuanian nation today.
