The coat of arms of the ethnographic region of Samogitia. At the centre the crowned shield features a snarling bear in chains looking left, flanked by a knight with sword and a female figure holding an anchor — evoking seafaring and the Hanseatic League. Below, the motto "PATRIA UNA" (One homeland). To the right: the Lithuanian mint mark; to the lower left: the year "2019". The inscription "Žemaitija" completes the design at the bottom.
Žemaitija — known in English as Samogitia — holds a special place in Lithuanian history, one whose influence extends well beyond the country's borders. The region in northwestern Lithuania was among the last in Europe to resist Christianisation and was only officially baptised in 1413, after centuries of being contested between the Teutonic Order and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. This tenacious independence shaped a pronounced regional identity: the Samogitian dialect is still considered the most distinctive dialect of Lithuanian and has been recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Samogitia was also an important node on the trade routes to the Baltic Sea; its connection to the Hanseatic League and to seafaring is reflected in the region's self-image, as is its closeness to the old Lithuanian noble families.
Samogitia's coat of arms, featuring a crowned bear, is among the region's oldest heraldic testimonies and already appears in medieval sources. In Samogitian tradition, the bear is regarded as a symbol of strength and independence of will — qualities that also characterise the region's political history. With the 2019 Lithuanian commemorative coin from the series "Ethnographic Regions of Lithuania", the country honours a landscape that has made a major contribution to Lithuania's cultural diversity, and whose inhabitants have preserved an especially vibrant regional folklore, language and festival culture.
