Further information

The Amerigo Vespucci is one of the oldest sail training ships still active in the world and is regarded as a national symbol within the Italian navy. The ship was commissioned in 1931 at the Castellammare di Stabia shipyard and has since served as a training vessel for naval officers in the Marina Militare. At roughly 100 meters in length with its distinctive three-masted rig, it belongs to the class of tall ships that became increasingly rare over the 20th century. It is named after the Florentine explorer and cartographer Amerigo Vespucci, who around 1500 was the first to systematically recognize that the coasts reached by Columbus formed a distinct continent — after which that continent was named America in his honor.

The 2023–2025 world voyage was the ship's first circumnavigation of the globe in its more than 90-year history, taking it through more than 30 countries on five continents. Italy used the voyage deliberately as a goodwill tour: in every port of call, the Vespucci represented Italian culture, craftsmanship, and industry — from fashion design to gastronomy to technology companies. The tour ran under the motto "Il mare unisce i popoli" (The sea unites peoples) and was also aimed at young people as a symbol of maritime tradition. To mark the conclusion of this historic voyage, Italy is issuing this 2-euro commemorative coin in 2025.
