An allegorical figure of Health, accompanied by symbols of the Ministry's areas of work: environment, research, nutrition and medicine. To the left, the Italian Republic abbreviation "RI"; at the top, the Rome Mint mark "R"; at the base of the female figure, the initials of artist Silvia Petrassi. Arcing from left to right in a semicircle, the inscription "MINISTERO DELLA SALUTE" (Ministry of Health) and the dates "1958–2018".
The Italian Ministry of Health, the Ministero della Salute, was established as an independent authority in 1958 — before that, health matters had been distributed across several government departments. Its founding marked a turning point in Italian postwar policy: the state systematically took on responsibility for public health, disease prevention, food safety and medical research. In the following decades, the Ministry coordinated the establishment of the Servizio Sanitario Nazionale, the national health service introduced in 1978, which guarantees all citizens access to medical care regardless of income. Italy is thus considered one of the first European countries to establish comprehensive, tax-funded healthcare by law.
Since its founding, the Ministry has brought together numerous areas of responsibility: from the control of medicines and food safety to environmental protection and the promotion of biomedical research. Institutions such as the Istituto Superiore di Sanità work closely with the Ministry, providing the scientific foundations for health-policy decisions. At the international level, Italy is active through the Ministry in WHO bodies and EU health policy. To mark the 60th anniversary of the Ministry of Health's founding, Italy issued a 2-euro commemorative coin in 2018, symbolically capturing the institution's various fields of work.
