Annemarie Renger

Annemarie Renger is one of the formative figures of the early Federal Republic of Germany. As long-time confidante and secretary of SPD party leader Kurt Schumacher, she acquired political weight early on and was elected to the German Bundestag in 1953, of which she remained a member, almost without interruption, until 1990. In 1972 the Bundestag elected her President of Parliament — the first woman to hold this office in the history of German parliamentarism. Renger did not see the position as a symbolic gesture but as a substantive mandate: she consistently worked to strengthen parliamentary procedures and the independence of the Bundestag. Her tenure fell in a period of intense societal debate about democracy, the rule of law, and the position of women in the public life of the Federal Republic.

Renger's significance for Germany's democratic history extends beyond the office of President. As a child of the Weimar Republic and a witness of National Socialism and the end of the war, she embodied a generation that did not take parliamentary democracy for granted but regarded it as a hard-won achievement. Over decades in the Federal Republic, she represented a social-democratic course centered on co-determination, social justice, and foreign-policy reliability within the framework of Western European integration.
