80th Anniversary of the SĽUK Slovak Folk Art Ensemble

The Slovak Folk Art Ensemble SĽUK (Slovenský ľudový umelecký kolektív) was founded in Bratislava in 1949 and is one of the most important professional ensembles for Slovak folk music, folk dance, and folk song in Central Europe. With hundreds of dancers, musicians, and singers, SĽUK preserves and interprets regional folklore traditions from every part of Slovakia — from the Záhorie lowlands to the Carpathians. The ensemble not only documents and maintains stage productions but also actively works on the ethnographic recording and transmission of folk songs and dance forms that vary strongly by region.

Since its founding, SĽUK has represented Slovak cultural heritage on international stages in Europe, the Americas, and Asia, making it a cultural ambassador for Slovakia abroad. Its repertoire includes original traditional folk dances such as the čardáš and regional mountain-farmer dances, as well as professionally arranged stage works that combine traditional forms with contemporary choreography. Based and primarily performing in Bratislava, the ensemble is firmly embedded in Slovakia's state cultural support system. Its 80th anniversary in 2029 honors this ongoing work of preserving and transmitting Slovak folk culture.
