Coin description

75th Anniversary of the Východná Folk Festival

Further information

The Východná Folklore Festival is regarded as the oldest and largest event of its kind in Slovakia. It originated in 1955, when dedicated folklore groups from the region decided to bring together Slovakia's rich folk culture tradition in a shared framework and make it accessible to a wider audience. The venue, an open-air amphitheater on the edge of the small village of Východná at the foot of the High Tatras in the Liptov region, provides the setting for a program combining folk music, dance, song, and traditional crafts. Around 1,500 performers take part each year, with audience numbers reaching up to 70,000 per edition.

The festival's cultural significance goes far beyond entertainment. It sees itself as a living archive of Slovak folk traditions: regional specificities from various ethnographic zones of the country — from the Tatras through the Carpathians to the lowlands — come together each year, documented and passed on in all their diversity. International ensembles have expanded the program for decades, adding comparative perspectives on European folklore. UNESCO has recognized the festival as an activity within the field of intangible cultural heritage. On the festival's 75th anniversary, Slovakia commemorates this cultural institution in 2030 with a 2-euro commemorative coin.
