Coin description

At the centre of the coin’s design is the official logo of Ireland’s 2026 EU Council Presidency. It shows a spiral arrangement of dots symbolising growth, dynamism and movement. Each of the five spiral arms consists of 27 dots, representing the 27 member states of the European Union. The open space created by the spiral in the centre forms a five-pointed star, echoing a central element of the European flag. The design is completed by the inscriptions “EU 2026” and “AE 2026”, where “AE” stands for the Irish name for the European Union (Aontas Eorpach). Above and below the motif is the country name “ÉIRE”.

Further information

Ireland takes over the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of 2026, stepping into a role the country has already filled several times in its EU history. Since joining the European Community in 1973, Ireland has held the presidency of the Council of the European Union seven times, including during formative phases of European integration. The 1990 presidency in particular is seen as groundbreaking: Ireland helped mediate negotiations on German reunification in a European context during that period and laid groundwork for the Maastricht Treaty. In 2013 too, Dublin took over the chair during a critical phase of the euro debt crisis and played a key role in consolidating fiscal stability mechanisms — not least because Ireland itself had gone through an EU bailout program only a few years earlier.

The presidency of the Council of the EU rotates among member states and changes every six months. The presiding country holds no formal legislative precedence but coordinates the Council's work, sets the agenda, and mediates between member states and with the European Parliament. Ireland brings a strong tradition of multilateral diplomacy to this role: as a small, open country with a strong export orientation and close economic ties to the EU single market, Dublin has a structural interest in well-functioning European institutions. Ireland's 2026 presidency falls in a period when the EU is grappling with geopolitical shifts, enlargement questions, and the completion of ongoing legislative procedures. To mark this Council presidency, Ireland is issuing a 2-euro commemorative coin in 2026.
