This Wednesday, 26 August 2026, Finland officially released its highly anticipated second €2 commemorative coin of 2026. The special issue honours the renowned Finnish architect couple Raili and Reima Pietilä, whose visionary, organic design language left a lasting mark on the country's post-war architecture.
Designed by Pekka Rytkönen, the coin's obverse features an artistic, abstract rendering of the iconic Dipoli building on the Otaniemi campus of Aalto University in Espoo. Created by the Pietiläs, this masterpiece is widely regarded as a defining example of Finnish post-war modernism. The design is complemented by a stylised tree motif, symbolising the couple's deep connection to Finnish nature and the way the Dipoli building is organically woven into its surrounding landscape. Along the upper edge, the inscription "RAILI REIMA PIETILÄ" marks the occasion for the coin's issue, arranged in clear, stacked lettering. To its left appear the country code "FI" for Finland, the year "2026", and the official mint mark of the Dutch mint. The design is rounded off by the letter "R" identifying the coin's designer, along with the twelve stars of the European flag on the outer ring.
The coin's total mintage is strictly limited to just 180,000 pieces. Alongside the standard uncirculated coins available in rolls, collectors can also choose from two special collector editions released on the day of issue: a coincard (brilliant uncirculated quality) available in two different versions with a mintage of 50,000 each, and a proof-quality presentation case limited to 5,000 pieces. The remaining coins will enter circulation through regular payment channels. The new coin is now available from specialist dealers.
