Two legs in motion and arcing dashed lines representing a running track. The design commemorates the centenary of the Finland–Sweden Athletics Match, honouring both Finnish sporting tradition and the event's spirit of camaraderie. Along the upper edge the year "2025" is shown horizontally. The mint mark of the Dutch Mint — the caduceus — appears to the left of the design, with the country abbreviation "FI" along the right edge.
The Finland–Sweden Athletics International is regarded as one of the most tradition-rich rivalries on the European athletics calendar. Since its founding in the early 20th century, the national teams of both countries have competed in an international match understood as far more than mere sport — a symbol of Nordic neighborliness. Athletics has historically played a special role for Finland: athletes such as Paavo Nurmi shaped the country's self-image as a sporting nation on the international stage and made Finland one of the world's leading athletics nations in the first half of the 20th century. The match against Sweden offered, from the outset, a structured framework for measuring and developing that strength.
Sweden and Finland share not only geographic proximity but also a long common history that traces back to Swedish rule over what is now Finland. This historical background lends the sporting encounter an additional cultural depth: it is no ordinary international match, but a recurring exchange between two societies with intertwined traditions. Over the decades, the event has shaped generations of athletes from both countries and remains a fixed part of Nordic sporting identity. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Finland–Sweden Athletics International, Finland issued a 2-euro commemorative coin in 2025 honoring this special sporting and cultural heritage.
