Coin description

Eight stylised ballot papers composed of abstract but recognisable circles and rectangles that partially overlap, creating smaller geometric shapes at their intersections. The year "2024" appears below the design; the country abbreviation "FI" and the mint mark of the Finnish Mint to the right. The commemoration inscription "VAL ◆ DEMOKRATI" (in Finnish) runs along the upper left edge, and "VAALIT ◆ DEMOKRATI" in Swedish along the lower right edge.

Further information

Finland's democratic tradition reaches back further than one might expect from a comparatively young state. As early as 1906, the Grand Duchy of Finland, then still part of the Russian Empire, introduced universal and equal suffrage — one of the first countries in the world, and the first in Europe, to grant women both the right to vote and to stand for election. The parliamentary reform of that same year created the Eduskunta as a unicameral parliament, which continues to hold legislative power today. This early commitment to political equality left a lasting imprint on Finnish society's self-understanding and formed the institutional foundation for the democratic state that emerged after independence in 1917.

Participation in elections is regarded in Finland as a central element of civic practice. The country enshrined the right to vote in its constitution and has continuously expanded it through direct presidential elections, municipal elections, and, since joining the EU in 1995, European elections. Voter turnout and the institutional reliability of the Finnish electoral system are regularly cited internationally as reference points for functioning democracies. In 2024, the year in which Finland recalls the foundations of democratic participation with this commemorative coin, European elections also took place — an occasion that places the theme in both a current and a historical frame.
