Uniformly sized, mirror-smooth circular surfaces set against a rough, matt background, forming the word "yle". Along the lower left edge the issuing country and year "SUOMI FINLAND 2026". The mint mark of the Dutch Mint in Houten — the winged caduceus — is positioned centrally, directly beneath the word "yle".
When Finland founded its state broadcaster in 1926, the country was only a few years into independence — the first broadcast by Yleisradio Oy, known as Yle, reached a society still under construction. Public broadcasting quickly developed into a central institution: it carried news in both national languages, Finnish and Swedish, supplied even remote regions of the sparsely populated country with information and culture, and played a stabilising role for the Finnish public during politically turbulent times, such as the Second World War and the post-war period. Yle remains fully state-owned to this day and is funded through a broadcasting fee tied directly to household income.
Yle's cultural significance for Finland is hard to overstate. Over the decades, the broadcaster has helped shape the national self-image, promoted Finnish-language literature, music and film, and built up coverage of the Sápmi region and Sámi-language content — evidence of the inclusive mandate that Finnish media law places on broadcasting. Today Yle operates several television and radio channels as well as one of the country's most widely used news platforms. To mark the centenary of Finnish broadcasting, Finland issues a 2-euro commemorative coin in 2026 recalling this founding history.
