Finland's first 2-euro commemorative coin for 2026 has been issued. The coin's theme is "100 Years of Finnish Broadcasting Yleisradio."
The obverse features uniformly sized mirror-polished circular surfaces against a rough, matte background, arranged to spell out the word "yle." Along the lower left rim appear the issuing state and year "SUOMI FINLAND 2026." The mint mark of the Dutch mint in Houten – the winged caduceus of Mercury – is positioned centrally just below the word "yle." The twelve stars of the European flag are on the outer ring. Designed by Petri Neuvonen, the coin has a total mintage of 180,000, including 50,000 each in Finnish/Swedish and English-language BU coincards, as well as 5,000 in proof.
Finnish public broadcaster Yleisradio (Yle for short) marks its centenary in autumn 2026. The national public broadcasting service was founded in 1926. In its early days, Yle was a modest studio whose first radio broadcast went out under the name "Suomen Yleisradio" from a studio in downtown Helsinki. It was not until 1928 that Yle's programmes could be received nationwide. By the early 1930s, around 100,000 households were tuning in. Television trials began in 1957 under the name Suomen Televisio, later renamed Yle TV1. Today Yle operates three national television channels, 13 radio channels and services, and 25 regional radio stations.
