The Official Journal of the European Commission, document 8287/26, has published the design of Finland's second 2-euro commemorative coin for 2026. The coin's theme is "Raili and Reima Pietilä."
The obverse pays tribute to Finnish architects Raili and Reima Pietilä and their nature-inspired approach to modern architecture. Their distinctive architectural style finds expression in the facade of Dipoli, a landmark university building in Espoo completed in 1966 to their designs.
Raili Pietilä (née Paatelainen, 1926–2021) and Reima Pietilä (1923–1993) rank among the most significant figures in Finnish post-war architecture. While many of their contemporaries favoured clean geometric forms, the Pietiläs developed an individual, organic style characterised by asymmetric shapes and a close connection to the Finnish landscape and natural world. They gained international recognition through the Finnish Pavilion at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair and through Dipoli, which is now considered one of the finest examples of organic architecture in Finland.
The commemorative inscription "RAILI REIMA PIETILÄ" – one word per line – appears at the upper centre. The mint mark of the Dutch mint, the caduceus, along with the country code "FI" and the year "2026" are arranged along the upper left rim. The twelve stars of the European flag are on the outer ring. The coin is planned for August 2026 with a mintage of 204,000.
