Estonia's first 2-euro commemorative coin for 2026 has been issued. The theme is "Sipsik." The obverse depicts the beloved Estonian children's book character Sipsik, created by author Eno Raud – a reader favourite since 1962 that has inspired a love of books in tens of thousands of children.
Sipsik, a creation of writer Eno Raud and artist Edgar Valter, has held a place in Estonian hearts for more than half a century. Through Sipsik's adventures, countless children have taken their first steps as readers, discovered the importance of friendship and care, and found the magic of play and imagination.
In the 65 years since Sipsik first appeared, the character has made its way from the pages of the children's magazine Tähekes to books, films – and now a coin. Coin designer Ivar Sakk based his design on original illustrations by Edgar Valter.
The commemorative inscription "SIPSIK" appears at the lower left, the issuing state "EESTI" and the year "2026" at the upper right. The twelve stars of the European flag are on the outer ring. The design was created in collaboration with the Estonian Children's Literature Centre, using Valter's original illustrations. Designed by Ivar Sakk, the coin has a mintage of 1 million, including 8,500 in BU coincard.
