A depiction of Sipsik, the beloved Estonian children's book character created by Eno Raud, who has captured readers' hearts since 1962 and introduced tens of thousands of children to the joy of books. The commemoration inscription "SIPSIK" appears at the lower left; the issuing country "EESTI" and year "2026" at the upper right.
Eno Raud, one of the most important Estonian children's authors of the 20th century, wrote the first Sipsik story in 1962 — at a time when Estonia was still part of the Soviet Union. The character, a homemade rag doll, is at the centre of a story about childhood, imagination, and family life that has accompanied generations of readers ever since. Eno Raud, born in Tallinn in 1928 and died in 1996, wrote numerous other children's and young-adult books as well as plays; Sipsik, however, is considered his best-known work and has been translated into many languages. The name is a diminutive of the Estonian word for sock — a deliberately simple title for a character whose appeal lies in its everyday familiarity.
In Estonia, the book holds the status of a classic: it belongs to the canon of Estonian-language children's literature and continues to be read in schools and reprinted today. Sipsik there is not merely a literary character but a cultural reference point closely tied to Estonian language and identity — all the more so because the book appeared at a time when Estonian culture was under considerable political pressure. With the 2026 Estonian 2-euro commemorative coin, Estonia honours more than sixty years of this character's continued presence in the national cultural consciousness.
