A flowering cornflower in the foreground on the left, with a meadow of swaying grasses rendered through overlapping lines in the background. Running along the left edge the Latin inscription "CENTAUREA CYANUS"; along the lower edge the issuing country "EESTI" and the year "2024".
The cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) is far more than a wildflower in Estonia: it is regarded as a national symbol of steadfastness and rootedness in one's own country. Its intense blue colour resonates with Estonian folk sentiment and appears repeatedly in the country's folk songs, textiles and visual arts. Historically, the cornflower grew as an arable weed in Estonia's fields, shaping rural everyday experience for centuries. During the national awakening of the 19th century, as a distinct Estonian identity took shape, the simple blue flower became a cultural emblem — partly because it stands in clear contrast to elaborate state symbols and expresses a down-to-earth connection to the country's nature.
Estonia is one of the few European states to have officially designated a national flower. The cornflower was declared the national flower in 1968 — a decision that endured even through the Soviet occupation, underscoring the plant's cultural significance. Botanically, Centaurea cyanus is originally a Mediterranean species that spread to Northern Europe along with grain cultivation; in Estonia today it is found mainly in extensively farmed fields and along semi-natural roadside verges. That Estonia chose the cornflower as the motif for a 2-euro commemorative coin in 2024, on the occasion of its EU Council presidency, shows the standing this symbol still holds in the country's official self-image.
