The design shows a stylized young girl gently cradling a bird in her hands. Since agriculture plays a central role for Ukraine, an ear of grain is depicted to her right. Her hair features a stylized, woven wreath of flowers. The occasion of issue, „SLAVA UKRAINI", appears in Ukrainian above the design, while the issuing country „EESTI" and the year „2022" appear along the bottom edge.
Ukraine has been a sovereign state since its independence in 1991, its national identity strongly defined by language, culture and an awareness of historical distinctness from Russia. The battle cry "Slava Ukraini" — "Glory to Ukraine" — dates in its modern usage back to the 1910s, when it was coined during the Ukrainian struggle for independence. After the Euromaidan of 2013/14, it experienced a broad social revival and became a symbol of democratic awakening, before gaining worldwide recognition following Russia's war of aggression from February 2022 onward. The response formula "Heroyam Slava" — "Glory to the Heroes" — forms a fixed pairing deeply rooted in Ukrainian society.
Estonia is among the countries that have stood especially firmly by Ukraine's side since 2022 — shaped historically by its own experience of Soviet occupation and its awareness of the threat posed by Russian expansionism. Estonian solidarity is expressed through extensive military and economic aid as well as a consistent political stance within the EU and NATO. Against this backdrop, Estonia issued a 2-euro commemorative coin in 2022 titled "Slava Ukraini" — a state gesture of solidarity in one of the gravest conflicts in Europe since the Second World War.
