A barn swallow in flight, with further birds perched on a power line in the background. Along the upper left edge the Latin inscription "HIRUNDO RUSTICA"; along the lower edge the issuing country "EESTI" and the year "2023".
The barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) is regarded across much of Europe as an indicator of intact agricultural landscapes and a functioning balance between humans and nature. Its population has been declining in most European countries since the 1980s, as structurally diverse farms disappear, insects become scarcer as a food source, and the open barn buildings where the species traditionally nests are modernised or demolished. In Estonia, the barn swallow has officially been recognised as the national bird for decades — a decision that reflects the close cultural bond of the Estonian population with agriculture and the summer landscape. This long-distance migrant winters in sub-Saharan Africa and returns every year to its Baltic breeding grounds, nesting mainly in rural areas.
Estonia is one of the countries in Northern Europe where barn swallow populations have remained comparatively stable, thanks to the high proportion of extensive farming and the slow pace of structural change in rural areas. Conservation organisations have long used the species as an indicator to measure the state of cultural landscapes and to underpin political demands for insect-friendly farming. Estonia's decision in 2023 to dedicate its own commemorative coin to its national bird sends a visible signal of the country's environmental self-image — and brings a topic into the public sphere that is of equal interest to ornithologists, conservationists and coin collectors.
