A group of figures forming a large heart in a collective embrace. The fifteen circles symbolise the Olympic rings and the continents represented. The lower point of the heart is crowned by Portugal's coat of arms. At centre: the logo of the Portuguese Olympic Committee. Along the lower edge: the commemorative inscription "EQUIPA OLÍMPICA PORTUGAL" and the year "2024". Along the left edge: the mint name "CASA DA MOEDA"; along the right: the designer's name "RITA MARGARIDA".
The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris were the largest multi-sport event of the year, bringing together athletes from more than 200 nations. Portugal has been a regular participating nation since the 1984 Los Angeles Games, with only a brief interruption, and has made a name for itself internationally in sports such as athletics, judo, triathlon, and cycling. The country has drawn particular attention through the successes of athletes such as Nelson Évora and Pedro Pablo Pichardo, who have shaped the image of modern Portuguese elite sport. The Comité Olímpico de Portugal coordinates the country's participation and has supported competitive sport at the national level for decades.
Portugal has won several Olympic medals overall, including gold in athletics — a result that shines an especially favorable light on the country's relatively small team of competitors. At Paris 2024, the Portuguese team competed in the 33rd modern Summer Olympic Games, in a year that also carried symbolic weight for international sport: for the first time since the founding of the Republic, the Summer Games returned to the French capital. Portugal issued a 2-euro commemorative coin in 2024 to officially mark this participation.
