On 5 May 2006, Joaquín Almunia (EU Commissioner) and Jean-Claude Juncker (President of the Eurogroup) announced the sensational news that a cross-border 2-euro commemorative coin would be issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Treaties of Rome. Only through numerous legislative changes and special provisions were all euro-area countries ultimately able to participate in the first multinational 2-euro commemorative coin issue.
Member states were required to translate the coin's inscription into their respective national languages. As these translations follow each country's own linguistic conventions, minor nuances between inscriptions cannot be ruled out.
