In the upper section, a triangle formed by three wavy stripes, a simplified rendering of the country's geographic shape. Below, 'Andorra', and beneath that 'EL PAÍS DELS PIRINEUS' (The Land of the Pyrenees). The three elements together form the registered trademark of the Andorran government, used consistently across all official communications for immediate recognition. In the lower section, the year of issue '2017'.
Andorra is a microstate at the heart of the eastern Pyrenees, nestled between Spain and France across barely 468 square kilometers. This high-mountain country, with its rugged topography, narrow high valleys, and peaks over 2,900 meters, ranks among the smallest states in Europe and is at the same time one of the highest situated. Politically, Andorra is a parliamentary monarchy under the co-princely rule of the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell — a constitutional arrangement unique in today's Europe, tracing back to a Pareatge treaty of 1278. This distinct status preserved the country's independence over the centuries, even though it always stood between the interests of larger neighbors.
Economically and culturally, Andorra has transformed from a remote shepherding country into a modern microstate with a significant tourism sector and low tax levels. Catalan is the official language and a central marker of identity — making Andorra the only country in the world where Catalan is the sole official national language. The country has been a member of the United Nations since 1993 and maintains close economic ties with the European Union without formally belonging to it; the euro nonetheless serves as its official currency. With the 2018 2-euro commemorative coin titled "El País dels Pirineus" — The Land of the Pyrenees — Andorra placed its geographic and national identity at the center of attention.
