A modern design of a tree bearing oak and olive leaves and fruit. The background features the hexagon representing the outline of France, with the republican motto "Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité" inscribed in the three uppermost leaves. Below: the monogram "RF" of the French Republic; to the left, the year of issue "2022"; and along the lower edge of the hexagon beside the trunk, the mint mark of the Pessac Mint on the left, Chief Engraver Joaquin Jimenez's mark on the right, together with the abbreviated signature "J. JIMENEZ".
The tree has been a symbol of life, growth and republican continuity in French iconography since the Revolution, when so-called "liberty trees" were planted from 1789 onward to represent the new political order. The oak and olive branches evoke strength and peace, two values central to French republican identity. The hexagon in the background, informally called "l'Hexagone", is a common nickname for mainland France derived from its roughly six-sided geometric shape.
