The design of France's second 2-euro commemorative coin for 2026 has been unveiled. The coin's theme is "The French Navy – 400 Years of Experience." The obverse features a French sailor in a traditional "bachi" (pompom hat) looking out to sea. An aircraft carrier and helicopter appear in the upper left, a reconnaissance aircraft in the upper right, and a frigate passing before the sailor in the midground. Below the waterline, a submarine is depicted to the left and a combat diver to the right. The mint mark of the French mint and chief engraver Joaquin Jimenez appear at the lower left; the commemorative inscription "400 ans MARINE NATIONALE" runs along the sailor's back; the year "2026" sits at the lower right; and the monogram "RF" crowns the upper rim. The twelve stars of the European flag appear on the outer ring. Designed by Joaquin Jimenez, the coin is issued on 30 June with a mintage of 20 million, including 15,000 in BU coincard, 15,000 in coloured proof case, and 500 in a mini coin set.
In 2026, the French Navy celebrates the remarkable milestone of its 400th anniversary. In October 1626, Cardinal Richelieu issued an edict establishing the foundations of a permanent, unified naval force in the service of France. The anniversary is being marked with festivities in Paris as well as in historic ports such as Calais and Brest, featuring military parades, exhibitions, concerts and shows.
