Christopher Columbus (1451–1506), navigator and explorer, three caravels and a compass rose; the country name "SAN MARINO" and a scroll bearing the dates "1506–2006"; the initials of designer Luciana De Simoni and the "R" mintmark.
Christopher Columbus is regarded as one of the most consequential seafarers in European history, although his origins remain a subject of debate to this day - the most plausible account places him around 1451 in Genoa. In the service of the Spanish Crown, he set out in 1492 on the first of his four Atlantic crossings and reached the Caribbean, unaware that he had touched a continent hitherto unknown to Europe. These voyages fundamentally changed the geopolitical map of the world: they laid the groundwork for the Spanish colonisation of the Americas, created new trade routes, and set in motion the transatlantic exchange of people, goods and cultures that shaped the modern era. Columbus himself died in 1506 in Valladolid, convinced to the last that he had been in Asia.
San Marino - one of the oldest states in the world and an enclave at the heart of Italy - has a particular connection to the maritime and humanist heritage of the Italian peninsula. Genoa, Columbus's possible birthplace, lies less than 300 kilometres away, and the idea of the bold venture into the unknown is part of the cultural memory of this region. The year 2006 marked the 500th anniversary of Columbus's death, which San Marino inscribed into European remembrance culture with a commemorative coin. The debates over his legacy - between the fame of discovery and colonial violence - have not since fallen silent, making Columbus one of the most contested figures in world history.
