The circulation coin shows King Albert II (b. 1934) of Belgium — in office since 9 August 1993 — in profile, together with the royal monogram, a crowned 'A II'.
King Albert II reigned over Belgium from 1993 until his abdication in 2013 in favour of his son Philippe. His reign was marked by recurring tensions between Flanders and Wallonia and by protracted government formations, during which the king served as a unifying, non-partisan figure. The crowned monogram "A II" featured on Belgian coinage throughout his reign.
