The initials LL of designer Luc Luycx appear to the right.
Pieter Bruegel the Elder is regarded as one of the most important painters of the Flemish Renaissance and had a lasting influence on 16th-century European art history. Born around 1525, probably in the Brabant region, he developed a distinctive style that combined peasant life, folk festivals and apocalyptic landscapes with extraordinary attention to detail. Works such as "Hunters in the Snow", "The Tower of Babel" and "Children's Games" are among the most reproduced paintings in Western art today and hang in leading museums from Vienna to New York. Bruegel worked mainly in Antwerp and Brussels, where he died in 1569 - a period of religious and political upheaval that is subtly reflected in his visual language.
His influence extends far beyond Flemish painting: Bruegel established a pictorial tradition of everyday life that influenced generations of artists, including his own sons Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Jan Brueghel the Elder. Belgium, as the historic heartland of the Low Countries and heir to this artistic tradition, cherishes Bruegel's work as national cultural heritage - the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels holds several of his key works. On the 450th anniversary of his death in 2019, Belgium honoured this exceptional artist with its own commemorative coin.
