Further information

Notre-Dame de Paris is one of the most significant Gothic cathedrals in Europe and has shaped the skyline of the French capital since the 12th century. Construction began around 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully and continued for roughly two centuries. The cathedral on the Île de la Cité was the setting for central events in French history: Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned emperor there in 1804, and it hosted state funerals and Te Deum celebrations following military victories. Its floor plan, twin-tower façade and system of flying buttresses made it a reference work of High Gothic architecture, influencing architects and theologians far beyond France.

The fire of 15 April 2019 destroyed the neo-Gothic spire and large parts of the roof structure; the shock was felt worldwide, and international donations poured in within hours. The subsequent restoration was regarded as one of the most demanding heritage conservation projects of recent times: craftsmen, restorers and engineers worked under strict historical guidelines on the vaults, stained-glass windows and spire. In December 2024, Notre-Dame de Paris reopened with great ceremony after five years of restoration. To mark this occasion, France is issuing a 2-euro commemorative coin in 2025 celebrating the rebirth of one of the world's most famous buildings.
