In the foreground, the Eiffel Tower depicted in running motion, arms outstretched. Below: the logo of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games, with the mint marks of the French Mint and Chief Engraver Joaquin Jimenez at the lower left. In the background: an athletics track, the monogram "RF" at the upper left, and the flower of the Tahitian gardenia. The Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde in Marseille appears in the background on the right.
Paris is regarded as one of the most significant Olympic cities in history: the French capital already hosted the Summer Games in 1900 and 1924 before becoming, in 2024, only the third city in the world to host them a third time. With around ten million inhabitants and its extensive infrastructure, Paris offered an unusual setting — many competitions took place directly against iconic backdrops, including the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, the Trocadéro, and the Grand Palais. The concept of "open games" aimed to bring athletes and the city's residents closer together than in previous editions. France invested heavily in infrastructure, including the cleanup of the Seine, which was used again for swimming competitions for the first time in decades.
The 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics were also a record-breaking event: more than 10,000 athletes from over 200 countries took part, and breaking was added to the Olympic program for the first time as an urban discipline. France was among the strongest nations and finished near the top of the medal table. The Paralympic Games, held immediately afterward, also drew record attendance and lastingly boosted the visibility of para-sport in society. To mark this major event, France issued a 2-euro commemorative coin in 2024 that anchors the Games in collective memory.
