Regine Hildebrandt
Regine Hildebrandt is one of the most striking political figures to emerge from the peaceful revolution of 1989. A biochemist from Birkenwerder near Berlin, she became active in the civic movement during the autumn of upheaval and rose to become a leading figure of an East German approach to politics that placed social justice at its center. In the first freely elected cabinet of East Germany, she took charge of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, and from 1990 to 1999 she served as Minister for Social Affairs in the state of Brandenburg. In this role she fought relentlessly for people who had lost their footing amid the economic upheaval following reunification — against mass unemployment, and for security and dignity. Her direct, unvarnished style and her readiness to confront conflict openly made her known nationwide and earned her the nickname "Red Regine."
Beyond Brandenburg, Hildebrandt stands for the effort to bring the experiences and concerns of the East German population into all-German politics — an issue that still resonates today. She died in 2001 at the age of 58; her name has remained present in Germany's political culture of remembrance. The German 2-euro commemorative coin of 2031 honors her as part of the "Unity and Justice and Freedom" series, through which Germany commemorates outstanding figures in German history.
